If you are thinking about getting pregnant or you have been having trouble conceiving you would do well to get your body in the best shape possible. This does not mean that you have to be fit enough to run a marathon, but it does mean that you need to take good care of your body. The human body is highly complex and finely balanced, and everything that we do or put into our bodies will have an impact. You would be amazed at what an enormous difference a few positive changes to your lifestyle can make.
The most important thing to consider here is that you are eating a well balanced, healthy diet to give your body the best nourishment that you can. That means eating food from all the food groups, plenty of fruit and vegetables, lean protein, complex carbohydrates, fibre and essential fats. Also make sure you keep hydrated with at least two litres of fluid a day.
It means getting moderate exercise every day. And it means avoiding things which are harmful to your body, such as nicotine, alcohol and caffeine.
2. STAY RELAXED AND POSITIVE
If you have been trying to get pregnant for a while and are having difficulty conceiving it can be a major cause of stress for you and your partner. Add to this the stresses of every-day life and it is easy to see how stress levels can skyrocket. The problem here is that prolonged levels of stress in itself can be harmful for the body and will almost certainly have an adverse effect on fertility.
It is important for your overall health to remain as relaxed and positive as possible. Try to enjoy life and avoid focussing on the fact that you have not yet got pregnant. There are many pleasurable ways in which you can relax. Practice deep breathing, have a massage, use aromatherapy or try meditating. Make sure you sleep well. Lack of sleep can harm the immune system and can also lead to a decreased sex drive. This will not help you in your goal to conceive!
Try to think positively. Do not focus on negative thoughts. If you feel yourself getting down, try saying things to yourself like “I'm doing everything I can to try to get pregnant.”
3. HAVE REGULAR INTERCOURSE – TIMING IS NOT EVERYTHING!
It may seem a rather obvious point, but if you want to get pregnant it is important to have regular intercourse with your partner. It is much better to have intercourse several times spread throughout the week rather than several times on a Saturday night and nothing else for the rest of the week! Try not to focus too much on finding the “perfect” time of the month. Try to relax and enjoy it. By becoming too preoccupied by finding the perfect time for conception you are putting pressure on yourself and your relationship.
Be as loving and supportive to each other as you can – this will mean that you are more relaxed and more likely to conceive.
Remember that it is normal not to become pregnant immediately. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after a full 12 months of regular unprotected sex. Remember too that the term infertility does not mean that you will never conceive. Keep healthy, stay relaxed and positive, and have regular, loving intercourse and you will greatly increase your chances of becoming pregnant.
