Crazy, grandpa called her. We all wondered why he would register a prized milking Shorthorn under such an odd name, but about as soon as you asked him she would live up to it. Like the time we were hanging onto the top row of the board fence and Crazy was out in the field. A cousin asked him why he had named her Crazy, and he said, “Well look at what she's doing.” That cow was running at the side of a washed out hill and butting it as hard as she could. Every time she would be thrown back, but she would line up that hill and go at it like she was going to knock it out of her way. The old man just stood there laughing with the rest of us, slapping his knee with a rolled up Stanley Home Products catalog. He had sold the stuff when his kids were young, and grandma still stood by the milk bath recipe that they sold.

Back then everybody had some sort of a milk bath recipe because that was an area where milk cows and dairies were plentiful. The only thing people raised more than those cows were chickens, and both the chickens and the cows were responsible for two different meals. Eggs and milk in the morning and fryers and/or steak for lunch and supper. Stanley Home Products bridged the times when farm products werent selling for the prices they needed them to, so that they could keep up the family. Some pictures showed grandpa going out on his Stanley Home Products rounds with a case and a smile. The case and the smile were both pretty hard.

The milk bath recipe was one of his biggest sellers because it allowed the ladies a respite from the hard work of the farms. For a few minutes a week they could lie in the sudsy water and dream that they were as fine as anyone anywhere. Stanley Home Products gave them the means to keep their homes spotless and escape all from the same salesman.

After a while he got prosperous enough to where he just ran cows and didn't sell the milk bath recipe anymore. He kept the sense of humor he developed on his rounds though, and he sold his grandkids every line that he ever used on his customers. Crazy was just one of the many ways he tried to entertain his kid's youngsters.
