Imagine for a minute that your aim is to run a marathon in 3 hours. You effectively have two ways to structure this into a goal. Among all of the other details you should include, you could say either:

1)I am not going to run slower than 3 hours in my marathon

2)I am going to run faster than 3 hours in my marathon

Both sound the same, but may end up providing very different outcomes.
You see, just about any goal can be phrased in a positive way or a negative way, and it is always the positive ways that will be the most effective.

When you spar, how hard should you and your partner hit?

The short answer is – as hard as you want.

If you’re preparing for a full contact match, then at least part of
your training will need to be full contact. Most martial artist don’t
compete regularly in full contact though, and many of them don’t
compete at all. For them, sparring full contact probably isn’t what
they want to do . . . but then they miss the benefits of full contact
training.

1. Try your race goggles in open water swims *before* the actual race. The visibility that you experience in the pool will be noticeably diminished in the open water. It doesn’t make sense at all for something as simple as goggles to severely affect your swim, so esnure that you’re confident with your current specs. If they leak, fog, or offer poor sighting in the open water, get a new pair. A company called Aquasphere makes a great swim mask with good face hugging capabilities and awesome visibility.

Almost all novice marathoners make the same mistake in their marathon training schedule. I made it while training for my first half-ironman triathlon and ended up with a knee injury that prevented me from running for two years. A teammate from my rowing team can’t run without pain to this day because of a mistake he made in college while training for a marathon.

The mistake is only natural. In fact, it’s part of our value system as Americans. It’s the idea that if some is good, more must be better.

The back fist is one of the most fastest hand techniques available. As it uses a snapping motion rather than a thrusting one, (like most other strikes), it can be whipped out in a flash. So why is it not used more frequently by martial artists. Well it is a technique that relies heavily on the striking point to achieve the best results. You must use the actual back part of the knuckles to strike.

If you are a beginner or just getting started in triathlon, here are 7 more tips on how to train smart for triathlon:

1. Try the distance – Do a “practice event” at your own pace a week or two before the event. You will learn a lot that will help you during your race. Think about things like:

- Pacing (for example, what pace do I need to do the swim in so the bike and run are doable?)

- Practice your transition strategy.

- How will you feel after riding and then transitioning to the run?

- Can you do the entire swim without resting? (most pool swims will let you rest at the wall but get out of the way of other competitors)
